Donald Trump government spends £25m in three years at state-owned Prestwick Airport

President Donald Trump’s administration has been revealed as the No1 customer of state-owned Prestwick Airport.

The SNP Government was accused of running a “Pentagon petrol pump” after it emerged the US spent nearly £25million there in three years.

US federal government data confirmed it paid £8.8million to refuel aircraft 644 times between October 2017 and March 2019.

It has since spent another £15.9million on 977 fuel orders.

The airport, which was rescued from collapse by the Scottish Government in 2013, posted increased total revenue of £36million for the financial year to March 31 this year.

The number of US military stopovers at Prestwick has risen since Trump took office, from 145 in 2016 to 259 last year.

A previous US administration was accused of using Prestwick to refuel “rendition” flights carrying uncharged terror suspects.

Scottish Labour’s deputy leader Jackie Baillie said it was “to all intents and purposes, a US military base”.

She added: “It seems the SNP is content to abandon their principles and turn a blind eye if there are enough dollars on the table.”

Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie asked: “Is there still a viable Prestwick Airport, or merely a Pentagon petrol pump?”

Prestwick Airport said it welcomed “a growing number of military customers from friendly countries including the US, Canada and Sweden”.

The Scottish Government said: “Glasgow Prestwick Airport is operated at arm’s length from the Scottish Government.”
