Donald Trump explains why he refused to meet Corbyn - and there's a huge flaw

Donald Trump has explained why he refused to meet Jeremy Corbyn on his State Visit to the UK.

The US President spoke again after revealing Labour's leader requested a meeting, but he turned it down.

When he made the remark - confirmed as true by Labour - Trump said it was because Corbyn was a "critic" of his attacks on migrants, Muslims and women.

But in an interview with ITV Good Morning Britain's Piers Morgan, the President has now given another reason.

Trump claimed it would have been "inappropriate" to meet Labour's leader because "a lot of things are happening right now" in British politics.

This is presumably a reference to resigning Theresa May , who he didn't want to offend by meeting the man who wants her job.

There's one huge flaw in this argument, though.

Trump had no qualms about meeting Theresa May's rivals within her own party, the men lining up to be the next Prime Minister.

The President invited leadership candidates Jeremy Hunt, Michael Gove and Boris Johnson for one-on-one talks despite not having them with our PM.

And he even met Nigel Farage at his London hideaway, the US Ambassador's residence Winfield House, in a behind-closed-doors session last night.

Mr Trump told Mr Morgan he would "certainly" meet Corbyn in the future but claimed it is a "long shot" that Labour's leader would become PM.

The President said: "He wanted to meet it was very tough to meet and probably inappropriate to meet to be honest with you.

"A lot of things are happening right now with respect to our country, your country, my country.

"So I don't think it was appropriate to meet him

"But anyway I certainly would, I'd have no problem with it, I think it's a long shot when you say that, I don't think it's going to happen."

Asked if he'd do a trade deal with a Corbyn government Trump said: "It’s always possible, anything's possible."

A Labour spokesperson said:  “ Jeremy Corbyn proposed a meeting with Donald Trump during the President's visit.

"Jeremy is ready to engage with the President on a range of issues, including the climate emergency, threats to peace and the refugee crisis."
