Donald Trump dismisses photos of him asleep at his desk, insists he’s simply been caught mid-blink

Donald Trump spoke too soon when he dismissed Joe Biden as “Sleepy Joe Biden”. Trump himself turns 80 this year, and the cold hand of time is resting upon his shoulder. His health problems are stacking up, his diet is terrible, and he’s been spotted snoozing through important meetings.

Now, a new Wall Street Journal piece, apparently intended to dismiss rumors of his failing health, has backfired catastrophically. This sees Trump himself admit he’s guzzling more aspirin than his doctors recommend due to a fear of “thick blood”, is shoveling down McDonald’s, and that his skin is so delicate the slightest graze sees his hands bleed.

But the most eyebrow-raising (and eyelid-lowering) remark came when Trump attempted to explain away the pictures and videos of him sleeping during meetings. Trump’s counter-argument is that it only looks like he’s sleeping – in fact, the camera has merely caught him mid-blink. As he said:

“Sometimes they’ll take a picture of me blinking, and they’ll catch me with the blink.”

Uh-huh. Sure, Don. This is a whopper even by Trump standards, as we can literally watch this “blink” for ourselves:

Sleepy ol’ Trump

Trump falling asleep while working shouldn’t be a surprise. The man turns 80 this year, and who would begrudge an octogenarian a nap? The problem is that most people in their eighties are retired and can lead a relaxed lifestyle suited to their energy levels and stamina,

Unfortunately for Trump, his endless criticism of Biden’s age meaning he’s unsuitable for the presidency has put him in a Catch-22 situation. To avoid Biden comparisons, Trump must pretend he has the stamina and endurance of a younger man, even when he clearly needs a rest from one of the high-pressure and demanding jobs in the world.

Maybe there should be an age limit to the presidency. After all, if you can’t even keep your eyes open during important meetings, are you really competent enough to lead a world superpower?
