Donald Trump defies official coronavirus advice by shaking hands at golf course

Donald Trump defied the advice of his own experts by shaking hands during a round of golf today.

The President sparked fury by visiting his own club in Virginia, US, today as thousands of Americans continue to die from coronavirus.

As well as shaking hands with another player, Trump was seen taking shots, waving at the camera and driving around in a golf cart.

He was reportedly playing alongside three other players, with none of them wearing masks.

Yesterday White House coronavirus task force coordinator Dr Deborah Birx said Americans could go outside this weekend, although she urged people to maintain social distancing.

She said: "So please as you go out this weekend, understand you can go out, you can be outside.

"You can play golf, you can play tennis with marked balls.

"You can go to the beaches if you stay 6 feet apart, but remember that that is your space and that's a space that you need to protect and ensure that you're social distanced for others."

Trump's decision to golf during the pandemic appears to contradict his past criticisms of Barack Obama for playing the sport during critical moments.

In 2014, he slammed the former President for choosing to play the game over attending an Ebola meeting in New York, when only a handful of Americans had contracted the disease.

He tweeted: "President Obama has a major meeting on the N.Y.C. Ebola outbreak, with people flying in from all over the country, but decided to play golf!"
