Donald Trump could meet with 'big powers' Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage during state visit to the UK

US president Donald Trump has said he could meet his "friends" Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson during his three-day trip to the UK next week.

Mr Trump heaped praise on the Brexiteers, saying he had great respect for the pair ahead of his state visit, which begins on Monday.

He told reporters outside the White House he "may" meet Brexit Party leader Mr Farage or Tory leadership hopeful Mr Johnson during his time in Britain.

But he refused to say who he supported among the various Tory Party candidates to replace Theresa May as prime minister.

Mr Trump said: "Nigel Farage is a friend of mine. Boris is a friend of mine. They're two very good guys, very interesting people."

The president hailed Mr Farage's "big victory" in the European elections, in which the Brexit Party received 32 per cent of UK votes.

Mr Trump described both the Brexit Party leader and Mr Johnson as "big powers".

He added: "I think they've done a good job.

"I like them ... but I haven't thought about supporting them. Maybe it's not my business to support people, but I have a lot of respect for both of those men."

During his visit to the UK, Mr Trump will attend a banquet with the Queen at Buckingham Palace and hold talks with Mrs May ahead of her departure from Downing Street.

The president's trip, from June 3 to 5, will also include a ceremonial welcome in the Buckingham Palace garden and a commemorative event in Portsmouth for the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Campaigners have said they will hold large demonstrations during Mr Trump's visit.

Thousands of people protested when the president visited the UK in 2018.
