'Hitler Youth' trends after Donald Trump demands 'patriotic education' in bizarre speech

Donald Trump last night demanded 'patriotic education' to replace a 'twisted web of lies' in American schools.

In a bizarre speech delivered in Washington DC's National Archives, the President ramped up his culture war, suggesting schools should be free from critique of US culture and history, and instead children should be taught "the magnificent truth about our country."

"Hitler Youth" trended on Twitter following the speech, as alarmed viewers compared the President's plan to the indoctrination organisation operated by the Nazi Party in 1930s Germany.

The President attacked Black Lives Matter and other protests which draw attention to America's history of slavery, racism and oppression of indigenous people.

To loud applause from the audience in Washington's National Archive, President Trump said: "A radical movement is attempting to demolish this treasured and precious inheritance. We can't let that happen."

Speaking slowly, and in unusually gravelly tones, the President claimed: "The left-wing rioting and mayhem are the direct result of decades of left-wing indoctrination in our schools."

He added: "American parents are not going to accept indoctrination in our schools, cancel culture at work, or the repression of traditional faith, culture, and values in the public square. Not anymore."

And he attacked the 1619 Project, a New York Times initiative aiming to put the country's history in the context of slavery and the contributions of black Americans, as well as racial awareness training based on 'critical race theory.'

Earlier the President was slapped down by Twitter over tweets which falsely claimed mail-in voting was vulnerable to fraud.

In tweets now marked as misleading by the social network, Trump wrote: "Because of the new and unprecedented massive amount of unsolicited ballots which will be sent to “voters”, or wherever, this year, the Nov 3rd Election result may NEVER BE ACCURATELY DETERMINED, which is what some want."
