Donald Trump has bizarrely tweeted a video of himself dressed as a farmer singing “Green Acres” at the 2006 Emmy awards, minutes before signing an agriculture bill.

The US leader signed the farm bill on Thursday after the Agriculture Department announced plans to tighten work requirements for food-stamp recipients.

Mr Trump shared the footage and captioned it: “Farm Bill signing in 15 minutes!” alongside the hashtag #TBT, which stands for Throwback Thursday.

"Green Acres is the place to be. Farm living is the life for me," sang Mr Trump, holding a pitchfork and wearing a white T-shirt, denim overalls and a straw hat, in the video.

Negotiations over the bill had stalled in Congress over a provision by the House to cut the food-aid program and the Senate's unwillingness to go along.

Trump had voiced strong support for stricter work requirements. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said a pending regulation to tighten work requirements was a tradeoff for Trump's support.

The farm bill reauthorizes agriculture and conservation programmes at a rough cost of $400 billion over five years, or $867 billion over 10 years.

The bill signing came as Washington is gripped yet again with a potential government shutdown.

Mr Trump earlier informed House Republican leaders he will not sign a Senate-passed bill to keep parts of the government operating because the measure has no money for the wall he promised to build along the border with Mexico.

Just days earlier, Trump had signalled he was stepping back from an earlier threat to close the government.
