Donald Trump beams as he steps into sumo wrestling ring during 'incredible evening'

Donald Trump was spotted having the time of his life in a sumo wrestling ring while presenting a special trophy to the winner of a tournament.

The world leader, 72, handed an eagle-topped "President's Cup" to champion wrestler Asanoyama at Ryogoku Kokugikan Stadium in Japan.

Mr Trump became the first sitting American president to attend a sumo tournament.

But the US President had to take off his shoes and don a pair of dark-coloured slippers to enter the ring, known as a dohyō in the sport.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Trump said: "That was something to see these great athletes."

He called it an "incredible evening".

Some 11,500 fans packed into Ryogoku Kokugikan Stadium in Tokyo for one of the country's most treasured cultural institutions.

Photos show Mr Trump grin broadly as he congratulates Asanoyama, a 25-year-old wrestler who only made his professional debut three years ago.

Mr Trump has been in Japan ahead of his state visit to the UK next month.

During his time in the Asian nation, he has played golf at Mobara Country Club with Japanese professional golfer Isao Aoki.

And he's held talks with business leaders, after which he stressed the US and Japan were "hard at work" negotiating a new bilateral trade agreement that he said would benefit both countries.

The US President will receive the honour of being the first foreign leader to meet Japan's new emperor, Naruhito, since he ascended to the throne on 1 May.

Details emerged last week of Mr Trump's visit to the UK , which starts on Monday June 3 and ends on Wednesday June 5.

The functions include a lunch with Prince Harry - though Meghan Markle is not expected to attend Buckingham Palace.

But widespread protests against Mr Trump are expected in London as there was for his visit in July last year.
