Donald Trump banned from Facebook and Instagram 'indefinitely'

Donald Trump has been banned from Facebook and Instagram 'indefinitely and at least for the next two weeks'.

The President of the United States had a series of social media posts deleted overnight which Twitter said excused violence, after protesters stormed the Capitol building as Joe Biden's presidential election win was being certified.

While he has been threatened with "permanent suspension" from Twitter, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has spoken out about Trump's use of Facebook and Instagram.

He said: "We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great.

"The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden.

"His decision to use his platform to condone rather than condemn the actions of his supporters at the Capitol building has rightly disturbed people in the US and around the world.

"We removed these statements yesterday because we judged that their effect — and likely their intent — would be to provoke further violence."

Shocking scenes unfolded in the US late on Wednesday evening (UK time) as the US Capitol building in Washington DC has to be locked down.

Violent clashes involving pro-Trump supporters and police broke out following a "Stop the Steal" rally which was attended by the President.

He said "we will never concede" the presidential election just as the US Congress and Senate were confirming the Electoral College votes from the 2020 presidential election, won by the Democrats.

Mr Biden's inauguration is set to take place on January 20 and this is officially when the President-elect takes his place in the oval office.
