Donald Trump backs 'friend' Boris Johnson for next PM while praising 'tough' Theresa May's handling of Brexit

Donald Trump has backed his "friend" Boris Johnson to be the next Prime Minister while praising Theresa May's handling of Brexit.

The US president, asked what he thought of Mr Johnson as Mrs May's potential replacement, said: “I like Boris Johnson a lot.

“He's a friend of mine."

It continues a love-in between the pair, with Mr Johnson having said last year there were many reasons for “admiring Trump”.

However, it was not so cosy when Mr Johnson was mayor of London. In 2015, Mr Johnson rubbished the comments of then presidential wannabe Mr Trump after he said the capital had been “radicalised”.

Mr Johnson had retorted: “Donald Trump's ill-informed comments are complete and utter nonsense.

“Crime has been falling steadily in both London and New York – and the only reason I wouldn't go to some parts of New York is the real risk of meeting Donald Trump.”

Mr Trump’s comments about Mr Johnson came in a White House huddle with reporters in which he also praised Mrs May.

He said: "She's a very nice lady. She's a friend of mine.

"I hope she does well. I hope the Brexit movement and everything happening there goes very well.

"But, Theresa May is a very good woman.

And, I'll tell you what, she's strong, she's tough, and she's in there fighting."

Mrs May this week promised Conservative MPs she would step down if her Brexit deal is passed by Parliament.

Backbencher and leading Brexiteer Mr Johnson has emerged as a frontrunner to replace her alongside environment secretary Michael Gove.
