Unfortunately, the Charlie Kirk murder always had the potential of drifting MAGA and the left even further apart. The preaching of a political unity was always threatened by politicians and bad actors, who would see this as an awkward opportunity to gain political mileage. Now, Donald Trump and his cohorts are releasing statements blaming the “radical left,” and even declaring “war” on them.
As things currently stand, the person of interest is reportedly in custody of the authorities after a very challenging manhunt. Trump announced that he learned the news just five minutes before he attended a morning news interview, where he revealed that he heard the man who arrested the person of interest used to be a minister. In the last two days, in the aftermath of the Kirk shooting, there have been significant developments about the identity of the shooter — with released videos and photos hitting the internet.

For some reason, however, the Trump administration and his supporters have decided to focus on how this is all the fault of left-leaning people in the political landscape. An X account, called Meidas Touch, was able to source all the divisive commentary that the right have been spewing since Kirk died. From accounts declaring war, and asking Democrats to be registered as terrorist organizations — the rhetoric has actually made political violence more likely, instead of easing people’s anxieties.

GOP Representative Nancy Mace even went as far as to blame the death of Kirk on Democrats — claiming they “own” it. Trump went further on this claim, this morning, when he mentioned during his interview that the difference between the radical left and radical right is that the latter are only radical in pursuit of law and order. And, in his opinion, the left are the only problem.

The initial response to Kirk’s murder seemingly showed promise. People from both sides were poised to have an actual, real debate on gun laws, and acknowledge how it affects everyone. There was also a wider-ranging discussion on how being desensitized about death, and mocking people who are mourning deaths, should be discouraged.
These useful conversations are all but lost now. Trump and his supporters have decided that Democrats are what they should focus on instead. This sowing of division might not bring in the results that either party wants in the long term — but, for the Trump administration, what matters is using this particular moment to enforce their portrayal of the left as the actual villains, as much as possible.
Anyone who has watched the horrific video of Kirk being shot and celebrated is certainly a victim of how social media has worked very slowly to make us numb. Elon Musk, taking over Twitter (now X), ensured that what will appear on your timeline, on that app, is the most salacious and controversial topic that is currently ongoing in that particular moment. And, slowly, people just descended into a state where the only thing that matters is coming out on top of a debate. It doesn’t matter who is offended, insulted, hurt, or now… dead.
The Trump administration, and the MAGA movement in general, seem that they genuinely considered Kirk as a person who spoke their language in a way that was understandable to the masses. If they truly want to preserve whatever positive legacy that was built — then stop sowing the divisions that they claim caused his murder in the first place.
