Donald Trump accuses Democrats and FDA of holding back coronavirus vaccine news until after election

Donald Trump has accused the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Democrats of holding back a coronavirus vaccine until after the US election.

Drug maker Pfizer on Monday announced that early data from its vaccine trial found it to be more than 90 per cent effective.

Mr Trump later took to social to accuse his opponents of manipulating the Covid-19 response in the United States in order to hinder his chances of re-election.

He claimed the Democrats “didn’t want to have me get a vaccine win” prior the the election, in which he was beaten by president-elect Joe Biden.

“The @US_FDA and the Democrats didn’t want to have me get a Vaccine WIN, prior to the election, so instead it came out five days later – As I’ve said all along!” Mr Trump wrote on Twitter.

The vaccine news came just days after Mr Trump was beaten in the US election.

Experts hailed the “promising” news of the Pfizer vaccine results as a “watershed moment” in the fight against Covid-19.

They said the results suggested the inoculation has “really impressive protection”, with suggestions it could speed up the development of other vaccines.

This could pave the way for the rollout of at least one jab in the UK early next year.
