Donald Penn talked with Trent Williams before signing with Redskins

The Washington Redskins’ left tackle spot now resembles something of a tangled web.

A new rumor has suggested the Washington Redskins have talked about trading Trent Williams (which could admittedly be them saying no when someone calls) and added Donald Penn via free agency in the interim.

And Penn talked with Williams about it.

Penn said as much, according to ESPN’s John Keim:

“Trent’s one of my good friends. I reached out to Trent before I signed and we had a good conversation. We talked and we’re on the same page. It was a personal conversation between me and Trent. I’ll just leave it at that.”

Considering Penn is 36 years old, it’s hard to imagine his arrival changes what the Redskins front office wants to do one way or another.

But Penn has been vocal in wanting to be a starter, hence his long stay on the market. There is an outside chance he got word Williams isn’t coming back, giving him the all-clear.

In a perfect world, the Redskins don’t have this drama with an elite tackle, nor is he conferring with a player the team just had to sign right before August. Now that things are in motion, it’s hard to see exactly how they shake out.
