Donald Penn explains why he chose the Redskins

New Washington Redskins left tackle Donald Penn turned some heads recently by pointing out he talked with Trent Williams before signing with the team.

Williams is in a standoff with the Redskins front office, so it was interesting — to put it one way — that he made the comment.

But that isn’t all Penn has said.

In a video at Redskins.com, Penn explained why he decided to sign with the Redskins: “We gotta lead the team, lead the offense…I’m not signing just to play, I’m signing to win.”

While the chance to start at the age of 36 probably didn’t hurt, Penn repeatedly stresses he wants to win. He said he likes all the quarterbacks fighting for the gig, though he noted Dwayne Haskins worked out with him this offseason. There’s always the Gruden connection too.

No matter what happens with Penn, the Redskins have to hope another aging veteran they brought on to play a key role can exceed expectations just like Adrian Peterson did last year.
