Donald Glover just opened up about something far more serious than anyone realized when he canceled his Childish Gambino 2024 tour last year. Fans only heard that the tour was off. Now he’s explaining the real reason behind that sudden decision, and it’s a lot heavier than most expected.
While speaking at the Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles, he shared that he’d actually suffered a stroke, something his doctor diagnosed after he pushed himself through pain that should’ve been a major warning sign. He said he’d been dealing with what he described as “bad pain,” which eventually sent him to a hospital, as reported by the BBC.

It happened right before a scheduled show in Louisiana. He said doctors later discovered a hole in his heart, something he didn’t know he had. Hearing him talk through it in front of a crowd, it was clear the moment still weighs on him. He explained that even though he felt something was seriously wrong, he kept performing anyway because he didn’t want to disappoint people.
In his own words, “I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana, and I did the show anyway. I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke.’”
He even brought up Jamie Foxx’s medical emergency in 2023 with a bit of humor to lighten the mood. “And the first thing I thought was like, ‘Oh, here I am still copying Jamie Foxx. That’s really like the second thing. The first thing was like, ‘I’m letting everybody down.’ I know it’s not true.”
That mix of honesty and self-awareness made the moment feel personal, almost vulnerable, like someone finally letting people see behind the curtain. He went on to explain that he’d also broken his foot around the same time, and the medical team’s checks revealed the hole in his heart. That discovery led to one surgery and then a second one shortly after.

“I’d broken my foot,” he said, “and they found a hole in my heart. So, I had this surgery, and then I had to have another surgery.”
He wrapped up his speech with a message that hit home for a lot of people listening. “They say everybody has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one. You got one life, guys.”
