Donald Findlay wades into SPFL playoff row as former Rangers figure makes sporting integrity claim

Former Rangers vice-chairman Donald Findlay has waded into the SPFL playoff row - as he reminded the league to retain some "sporting integrity".

Findlay, now chairman of Cowdenbeath, has seen his team endure a dismal season in League Two.

After losing to bottom side Brechin City there remains an outside chance that the Glebe Park club could overhaul the eight point gap between them and the Blue Brazil to leave the Fife side in the position of club 42 - and so in danger of taking part in a pyramid playoff in which their place in the SPFL would be on the line.

Lying in wait in that playoff are either Brora Rangers or Kelty Hearts, who were declared Highland and Lowland League champions after just three and 13 games respectively and were supposed to square off in the first leg of the semi-final last weekend.

Findlay believes it's unfair to the bottom SPFL club as discussions continue over whether the playoff should proceed as planned, with Brechin favouring league reconstruction to save their skin.

Kelty and Brora meanwhile argue they deserve their chance after Covid denied them the opportunity to play for a place in the league last time, but Findlay told BBC Sportsound: "It is all about fair competition.

"It can't be fair that you just nominate somebody after three games. There has to be sporting integrity. The pyramid? Fine - provided it's operated on a fair and equitable basis.

"I'm not stopping them playing a game to decide which of the two of them wins that game.

"The question is, is it fair and does it have integrity for that team then to play off against club 42?"
