Donald Cerrone drops social media hint that he’ll fight Conor McGregor

Donald Cerrone has dropped a social media hint he will fight Conor McGregor after the Irishman laid out his comeback plan.

Cerrone has been tipped to take on McGregor when he makes his long-awaited comeback on January 18.

McGregor announced his return at a Moscow press conference on Thursday, although his opponent has not yet been revealed.

But Cerrone posted a photo of a bottle of Budweiser next to a bottle of McGregor's brand of Proper Twelve whiskey on Instagram on Thursday night, along with the caption: "Need I say more?"

His post appeared a clear hint that he could be the man to fight McGregor before the the superstar targets a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Discussing his comeback fight in Moscow, McGregor said: “As far as the opponent, I have the opponent’s name, but for me and the game that I’m in, and from experience, if I was to give you people the name - which I would love to do - I know the UFC would flip it because they are a crafty company.

“For me, here’s this one, ask the UFC who the opponent is because I do not give a f*** who the opponent is."

His statement comes after UFC chief Dana White named Cerrone as a potential opponent in an interview last week.

The "Cowboy" would represent a testing bout for McGregor, but the 36-year-old would be a major underdog having suffered 12 defeats in his 48-fight career.

He has lost his last two fights, against Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson, but is still ranked fifth in the lightweight division.

White said: "For Conor, we've got Cowboy (Donald Cerrone), we've got (Justin) Gaethje . There are guys out there that Conor could fight.

"We'll see what happens with Nate Diaz and Masivdal next month, and the list goes on and on.

"Either one. I would take Cowboy, I would take Gaethje. We've got to see what happens with Tony (Ferguson) and Khabib, we're trying to make that fight right now, hopefully in March."
