Donal Og Cusack would be interested in managing Cork hurlers

Donal Og Cusack has thrown his name in the hat to be the next Cork hurling manager.

The Rebels are on the lookout for a new boss after John Meyler decided yesterday against seeking reappointment after a two-year stint.

And three-time All-Ireland winner Cusack admitted he'd jump at the chance to take the reins if the conditions were right.

"Of course I’d be interested," he told the RTE GAA Podcast. "I played for Cork since I was Under-14 and at every level since."

"Is it the right time? What are Cork looking for? Is it one year, two year, three year? Does the manager bring in his own people?"

But Cusack stressed the importance for the county of a new high performance manager who will work with all Cork coaches and management teams.

He added: "I’ve said it before - the biggest appointment that Cork are going to make over the next while is that high performance person."

Meyler guided to Cork to a defence of the Munster championship last year but they missed out on the final this term before succumbing to a six-point loss to Kilkenny in the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

But Cusack, who hit headlines this week for likening critics of defensive hurling tactics to the "last remnants of British culture" in Ireland, believes Meyler can be proud of his spell in charge.

He said: "You’d have to say Cork won a fierce Munster championship last year and they had won it the year previous so retaining it was a challenge.

"They were one of two teams that got out of Munster both years (along with Limerick) of this new system and much has been said about last year’s All-Ireland semi-final so it is a fact that John was within a whisker of getting to the final.

"I think in general that people will have felt that the team didn’t progress this year and it would be hard to argue with that based on results. He has done well over the last couple of years, he was also part of a lot of underage management teams."

The bookmakers make former Rebels boss Kieran Kingston the favourite to be given the nod ahead of Cork U20 manager Denis Ring and Cloyne man Cusack.

While UCC manager Ger Cunningham has refused to rule out a return to intercounty management.
