Don't use hand sanitiser if you're handling fireworks this July 4, experts warn

Tomorrow, people across the US will celebrate Independence Day - the day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the US as an independent nation.

Every year, stunning fireworks displays are held across the country, but experts have warned that people should take extra precautions this year.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, many people have been using hand sanitiser more regularly, which can spell disaster when mixed with fireworks.

Hand sanitisers typically contain between 60% and 70% alcohol, which is highly flammable.

Speaking to CNN, Maureen Vogel, a National Safety Council spokesperson, explained: “Alcohol and fire do not mix.

"You shouldn't pair flammable items; it's the proverbial recipe for disaster."

Hand sanitiser aside, fireworks send thousands of people to A&E every year.

According to figures from NHS Digital, there were almost 2,000 occasions of people going to A&E linked to fireworks in 2018/19.

And with a surge in the use of hand sanitiser thrown into the mix, the number of firework-related injuries could be even higher this year.

DR HILARY: WILL MY HAND SANITIZER CATCH FIRE?

If you’re going to watch any firework display this year, it’s best to wash your hands with soap and water, and not hand sanitiser.

The Greensboro Fire Department advised: “Keep in mind, if you are using consumer fireworks this year, DO NOT USE HAND SANITIZER AT THE SAME TIME!

“Wash your hands only with soap and water. Hand Sanitizer is flammable!!”
