'Don't take Newcastle United fans for granted' - Steve Bruce's warning to his players

Steve Bruce has warned his players they can't take Newcastle United's hardcore fans for granted this season.

Some supporters voted with their feet when opting to start the 250-mile trip home early after United leaked goals after 63 and 75 minutes.

By the end there were notable gaps in the away section as the players made their way over to applaud the fans.

Bruce said: "It is a big disappointment and it always will be.

“You can’t take them for granted.

“They had a long way home after a disappointing performance.

“I will go back to work this week and try to get prepared better and look forward to Tottenham."

When asked whether there was a determination to get things right this week, Bruce said: “Of course. We all know that the players can do better than that and it’s something we’ll look at."

Bruce opted against starting the game with Sean Longstaff on Saturday.

Explaining why he said: “He is still sore. He’s had a serious knee injury and has been missing for five months.

“I thought in pre-season his first game was against West Ham four weeks ago.

“Sean was much easier with it when he came on as sub and played a great pass to Jonjo who scored.

“I have to protect the kid as he’s had a wonderful rise.

“Unfortunately, he has had a serious knee injury which has affected him."
