Don’t Starve Together best characters tier list

Don't Starve Together has a wide roster of characters to choose from, with post-launch expansions increasing the total number of options.

The general gameplay allows you to pick characters you love, whether you're playing solo or in a team. That said, some characters are simply better. Let's take a look at how the characters shape up in 2025 (especially since we have had all the additions over the years).

Don't Starve Together tier list

In general, characters in Don't Starve Together are pretty varied in their skill sets, and your preferences could be different from mine. There are very few characters who are excellent at playing solo and are pretty poor in a squad (and vice versa). To classify the characters, I have used four tiers.

  • S-tier characters are the best choices, and they are perfect in their respective roles.
  • A-tier characters are pretty decent as well, but they have a few small weaknesses.
  • B-tier characters are okay choices at best.
  • C-tier characters are better avoided at all costs.

Character Solo tier Multiplayer tier Explanation
Maxwell A-tier S-tier Maxwell's biggest strength is mass collecting resources, which is amazing when playing in a team, but falls off when playing alone. He is still one of my favorite characters in the game, but there are definitely better alternatives in solo play. In duo, he is arguably one of the best characters to use.
Walter C-tier B-tier Walter is somewhat useful in a squad due to his ability to provide DPS buff and additional bag space. The importance reduces when you're playing solo.
Warly C-tier A-tier His buffed dishes become redundant when playing alone, but gain use when playing in a squad with other players. His other weaknesses are covered well in a squad, unlike solo play, and hence the better tier rating.
Webber B-tier A-tier Webber can mass farm spiders. In solo play, you have better options for spider farming in the form of Wickerbottom and Wendy. However, Webber is easier to set up in terms of resource costs, which makes him pretty good in multiplayer. His usefulness rises with a rising squad size.
Wendy S-tier A-tier Wendy is one of my favorite go-to characters when playing alone. She's great at farming, has amazing DPS, and can also rush Bee Queen to set up a strong early game. She falls slightly in the multiplayer mode compared to Wickerbottom, but holds her fort in solo play.
Wigfrid B-tier A-tier In solo, Wigfrid has always felt very weak. When playing in a squad, her songs can buff allies. Her buffs aren't the strongest in the game, but she's still a good support choice if you don't have Wulfgang.
Winona B-tier B-tier Winona is the perfect definition of being average. Her catapults can create good farming opportunities, especially in a squad. Unfortunately, there are just better characters who do what she does in Don't Starve Together (and more).
Willow C-tier B-tier Willow's ability to farm Night creatures with Bernie becomes a threat when playing on a multiplayer server. A bunch of them can farm a lot of nightmare fuel quickly, and you can also gift her a lighter in a squad, which isn't possible in solo play.
Wulfgang S-tier B-tier Wulfgang is one of those rarer characters who shine when playing alone. His damage, mobility, and ability to manipulate sanity, along with self-healing, make him incredibly strong when playing alone. Sadly, the importance of the same elements goes down when you're playing in a squad. While he can still result in faster boss clearances, the time you save isn't really worth much.
Wickerbottom S-tier S-tier This is the best character in the game. She's great against Queen Bee, so that's early game for you. She has great farming ability, which is even better if you're playing in a group, and great at providing resources. In fact, she should be a must-have character in every squad.
Woodie A-tier A-tier One of the safest characters to pick in the game. Does a bit of everything from mass gathering to clearing mobs. Can't go wrong with the choice.
Wes C-tier C-tier If you want to play DST on Ironman challenge (it's a joke), go ahead with him.
Wurt B-tier A-tier Some of Wurt's limitations regarding her eating habits are better managed when in a group. She can utilize the Royal Guards in boss fights, which makes it easier for your group.
Wortox S-tier S-tier Imagine playing as a character in a survival game whose health is infinite due to his souls mechanic, and he can even control his sanity. He doesn't need to eat, which means more food for everyone else in your group. Feels like a cheat code at times.
WX-78 S-tier S-tier This animatronic offers the highest chances of success in ruins, making you rich with more ancient equipment than you can need. He also feels like the joint-best resource gatherer with Maxwell (might even be the best one), and you can bypass the difficulties of a season with his Telelocator Staff.
Wilson C-tier C-tier Has a beard and not much else.
Wormhood C-tier A-tier Wormhood can't fight for the good of life, but he's one of the best mass resource gatherers. He shines a lot when playing in a group, as allies can cover his lack of DPS.
Woodie B-tier A-tier Does the same things that Maxwell offers, but in an inferior fashion. Does decent alone but better in a squad, and offers efficient farming as well (which is always useful while playing in a squad).

If you're using mods in Don't Starve Together, you'll have a lot more options to explore (and some of them can be too broken. Just something to keep in mind).
