Don’t speak to me until I’ve taken my 225,000,000km nap

Men Who Hate Women Hate Women

Incels claim they’re not actually misogynist. An academic made the effort to demonstrate that, yeah, they’re plenty misogynist — and racist as well (reader advisory: this article contains a despicable form of intersectional hate). Alabama jailed a woman who “endangered her fetus”. It didn’t matter that she wasn’t even pregnant. Underage marriage is still widespread in Pakistan, despite repeated attempts to ban it. Here’s why Saudi Arabia won’t dare criticise its deadly enemy Iran over its treatment of protesters — after all, it hates women as well. The South Australian government spends taxpayer money to welcome the scum of the Saudi golf tour to Adelaide.

Neither rare nor well done

Everyone blames social media for ruining politics, but don’t forget, television got there first, writes AC Grayling. Musk can’t afford a fight with Apple. Time for the media to ditch platforms like Twitter — it’ll happen sooner or later. Twitter enables Russian anti-Semitism. How the US media got the midterms so wrong. In Hollywood, all that glistens isn’t dross. The story of “Night and Day”, Cole Porter’s best song.

Delusions

Americans believe their country is the great melting pot. The reality is very, very different. There’s no resurgent crime wave in the United States, but Americans prefer to tell themselves the streets aren’t safe. Pacific century? US trade with Europe is now outpacing trade with China. Desperate to flee, Britons are exploiting their ancestry to get a passport in Europe. The worst abuser of spyware in Europe — Spain — is trying to disrupt the European Union’s efforts to investigate its prevalence and impacts.

The 225,000,000km nap

Get your ass to Mars — asleep. Ain’t gonna be any other way. How third-party data brokers could enable police to pursue and prosecute women exercising reproductive choice. How COVID has put the spotlight back on moral injury and the massive damage it inflicts on individuals and societies. A new calculation might have dealt with the problem of why the universe is as it is.

Bonus Mae West content

Last week was Mae West’s 129th birthday. Two books on her amazing life, from the 1990s and 2000s. Surrealism and Mae West’s lips. Would you like to buy Mae West’s car? Read about her tour of post-war Britain here. From Chips Channon’s diary, February 17, 1948:

“Dripping with rubies and elegantly dressed Peter and I went to pick up Miss Mae West, the world-famous comedienne; we were nearly mobbed — a crowd jumped on the car shouting for autographs etc. Peter and I feared that the Rolls would be smashed up. However we arrived at Georgia Sitwell’s party — where we made an entrée, sensational and spectacular. Everyone was delighted, amazed. I quickly presented her to the Duchess of Kent who was amused, and then led up Emerald, Mollie Buccleuch and others to her. Danny Kaye also arrived — a theatrical-cum-haut monde evening which lasted, alas, until nearly 5am.”

Finally

Here is a good dog. And a good cat. I couldn’t find videos of good rabbits, but here is rabbit/chicken content. And the amazing glass octopus.

Before I turn into one of your old male relatives who just sends random stuff he finds on the internet to you by email all the time, this’ll be the last Side View for a while. I’m taking a little break from work shortly and I look forward to sharing more of the internet’s least worst content with you in 2023.

Until then, take care.
