"Don't neglect a chest pain as gastritis": Doctor shares insight on how to prevent heart attack

From assuming it as a minor gastric issue to ignoring persistent chest pain, we neglect our heart a lot. One of the major organs of the body mostly gets damaged because of our own faulty lifestyle.

Since Monday, #heartattack is trending on social media with several users sharing their experiences with surviving the life threatening condition. People are also sharing details of someone close to them who has a similar experience.

One such discussion has been initiated by Dr Edmond Fernandes, a community health physician and Founder, CHD Group.

Keep aspirin in wallet

"With #heartattack trending, keep Tab Aspirin 300 mg in your pockets/wallets always & pop it asap if u develop sudden severe chest pain/radiating to neck-left arm. Don't neglect a chest pain as gastritis. Evaluate evaluate. Your heart, your life. Don't let the valentine fail you," tweets Dr Fernandes.

Dr Fernandes' tweet has turned out to be an interesting thread. Many people have shared their health issues and have got a detailed reply from him.

"I have family history of heart attack and get left arm pain sometimes"

"I have family history of heart attack and get left arm pain sometimes but not neckpain and hence get tensed. But it comes down after time.. is it ok have Aspirin in such time just to be on the safer side," writes one user.

To this Dr Fernandes' replies: You need to undertake further tests. What u are stating is angina based transient attacks. Please don't ignore and get comprehensive tests done. Partial blocks might exist. If u have a good doctor, do consult, else happy to figure out someone where you are based. Stay safe.

Is sorbitrate 5mg enough?

"Doc, I have sorbitrate 5mg in my wallet all the time. Will that help in case of sudden chest pain till i get medical attention?"

Provided u take it sublingual asap and rush to emergency or someone rushes u, recommends the doctor.

Sublingual administration of medicines is placing a drug under the tongue so that it dissolves and absorbs into the blood through the tissue there.

"Are these the same symptoms for women?"

"Mostly yes," replies the doctor.

The heart attack symptoms are mostly overlooked by women. It is because of the intensity of the pain and the endurance capacity of the women.

Another reason is that women always neglect their health.

The common signs of heart attack are pain in neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back, upper abdomen, shortness of breath, pain in arm, nausea, vomiting, sweating, dizziness, unusual fatigue and indigestion.

Does it apply to Indians as well?

The aspirin recommendation was questioned by a user whether it is applicable to Indians as well.

To this Dr Fernandes gave a witty answer: V r talking heart attack right? Very much globally applicable. Humans are humans in the US or in India. Stay safe.
