'Don’t make a good chance better' - how Clough's advice should be heeded at Nottingham Forest now

Brian Clough used to say ‘don’t make a good chance better’ – and that’s advice I think Nottingham Forest’s current crop would do well to take on board.

In recent games, Forest have been guilty of overplaying, trying to fashion the perfect opportunity and coming somewhat unstuck.

In too many games at the City Ground this season, I’ve watched the Reds be ponderous on the ball in and around the penalty box, not being clinical when they have the chance - being wasteful.

Ryan Yates’ header on Tuesday night to give Forest the lead against Boro was a prime example of what happens when you get the ball into the box early.

Yates’ run was a good one and the cross from Matty Cash landed perfectly on his head, because Cash took the ball early.

Crossing early is so key.

Lewis Grabban will make a run, and then you’ll see Tiago Silva or Joe Lolley check back, by which point Grabban’s run is wasted, he has to come back out and Forest have lost the chance to get an advantage.

They need to move quicker, think quicker and as I’ve mentioned previously, the manager has to find a way of getting a tune out of Silva, Lolley, Joao Carvalho and others.

There’s no shortage of attacking flair in that team and the next month is the time for to start showing it at home.

Be brave, have confidence and believe that you have better players than the other team.

Cloughie always made us believe that at home, nobody could come between us and victory and that’s the spirit I want to see from this talented Forest side.
