Don't let NHS cancer patients pay the price of focus on global pandemic

Our health service has deserved the praise it received from all quarters for the response to the global pandemic.

But NHS bosses are not immune from criticism, even in these unprecedented times.

It was revealed yesterday that fewer cancer patients than normal were referred for tests and treatment in the month up to the end of June.

Despite the drop in numbers, the health service still struggled to cope.

Almost two-thirds of Scots patients had to wait longer than the six-week-maximum time for a diagnostic check like an endoscopy - vital for detecting several kinds of cancer.

But this is not just an issue which has cropped up as part of the pandemic - problems with waiting times have plagued our NHS long before most people had heard of a coronavirus.

The number of people waiting for cancer tests and treatment simply cannot be allowed to build up further.

People need to feel confident that if they have suspected cancer symptoms, they will receive a test swiftly and safely.

Everyone accepts the NHS is under extreme pressure during this current crisis. But as charities say, cancer patients cannot pay the price of the pandemic.

The Government needs to invest whatever it takes to ensure that once corona is gone, we’re not left with cancer problem of epidemic proportions.
