Don’t expect Mitchell Trubisky to get benched during a game

During last week’s game against the New Orleans Saints, there was a moment when some people wondered if Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy would bench starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky for backup Chase Daniel.

Following the Bears’ embarrassing 36-25 loss, Nagy said that “it never crossed my mind” to bench Trubisky in favor of Daniel, noting the offense’s struggles as a whole.

Nagy clarified his stance on any potential benching of Trubisky in the middle of a game with reporters this week, where he said he’s against benching a quarterback based on performance during a game.

“You’re committed,” Nagy said, via the Sun-Times. “And for us, this is where we’re at with Mitch right now: We’re giving him every opportunity to be that leader and to go out there and make plays, along with every other position.”

While Trubisky’s future in Chicago looks as clear as the Fog Bowl that overtook the city in 1988, the Bears should — and likely will — stick with Trubisky as their starter for the final 10 games as he gives them their best chance to win.

Should Trubisky miraculously improve over these final 10 games, then the discussion might change and thoughts of benching the third-year quarterback would become an afterthought.

But if Trubisky struggles (again) against a banged-up Chargers defense on Sunday, don’t expect to see Daniel in his stead.
