Don’t demand affidavit for loss of property: Hemant Nagrale

MUMBAI: City police commissioner Hemant Nagrale on Thursday issued a circular instructing personnel not to ask for an affidavit from people who approach police stations for a certificate after loss of property.

The city police, for the last couple of years, has been into the practice of asking aggrieved citizens to get an affidavit from a notary before issuing a certificate of loss of property. Nagrale has now warned of strict departmental action if any police officer asks for an affidavit.

Terming such practice at police station level as illegal, Nagrale in his one-page circular stated, “There is no provision in the law for such an affidavit. Yet such an affidavit is demanded.” The circular has been issued to all police authorities concerned. People approach the police if they lose a bank’s cheque book, passport, driving license, important identity cards etc. Once they get a letter from the police for loss of property, they can apply for a copy of their document.
