The singer Don McLean has been issued a restraining order regarding his wife, Patrisha, following his arrest on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge on Monday.
On Thursday, McLean released a statement through Twitter and on his website, saying he might “never recover” from the “painful breakdown of an almost 30-year relationship”.
“There are no winners or losers but I am not a villain,” he added.
McLean, 70, is most famous for singing the hit American Pie. He was arrested and posted $10,000 bail at the Knox County jail early on Monday.
The following day, Patrisha McLean obtained a temporary protection from abuse order from Rockland district court, prohibiting her husband from contacting her, the Portland Press Herald reported.
In a statement supporting her request for the restraining order Patrisha McLean wrote that her husband “terrorized me for four hours until the 911 call that I think might have saved my life”.
She wrote that McLean was prone to rage during the first decade of their marriage, and would sometimes grab her legs or arms so hard they were bruised. Patrisha McLean added that in 1994 her husband squeezed his hands against her temples, making her feel like her head was in a vise.
The alleged attack on Monday was similar to the one in 1994, Patrisha McLean wrote, and her head still hurt two days later. McLean scared her “with the intensity of his rage and the craziness in his eyes”, she wrote, alleging that he grabbed her hand and said “I want to strangle you bad” when she tried to leave.
Patrisha McLean wrote that had she not deflated her husband by telling him she was calling 911, she felt he would have killed her.

In his statement on Thursday, McLean wrote: “There are no winners or losers but I am not a villain. I may never recover from this but I will try and hope to continue to entertain you all as I always have.
“I ask God to give us the strength to find new happiness and I hope people will realize that this will all be resolved but I hope I will not be judged in this frantic media environment.”
