Don McLean announced Edinburgh gig to celebrate 50 years of 'American Pie' album

Don McLean will visit Edinburgh next year to celebrate 50 years of his biggest selling album and single: 'American Pie'.

The American singer/songwriter will grace the Usher Hall with his presence in September 2022 to rekindle his lust for the City.

McLean has a Scottish background as his grandfather and father both have roots originating from the country.

American Pie, recorded in 1971 and then charting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, is by far McLean's greatest hit.

Although the track has a running time of 8:36, it won over fans with its gripping references to the death of fellow music artists and subsequently, the development of American youth culture.

The 75 year old has enjoyed an enduring career of the back of American Pie, with the single being induced into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015. McLean's hand-written lyrics to the single were recently sold by Christies for just over $1.2 million but the song is already a timeless classic.

McLean has spoke of his admiration for Scotland, and particularly, Edinburgh in the past. In 2015 he told the Edinburgh Reporter: "I'm looking forward to visiting Scotland very much. Edinburgh is beautiful, I love it there. It's just majestic. It's like no other place and I really mean that."

'Vincent' is another one of McLean's most famous records, it was a tribute to the 19th century Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh. His inspiration for the song came after reading a book about the artist and it reached an impressive 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, proving to be a worldwide hit.

As well as playing in Edinburgh, McLean will also be touring in Glasgow and several other UK venues, as well as shows across Europe.
