Elijah Moshinsky’s production of Don Carlos returns to Sydney with an international cast of over 200. Verdi’s renowned opera is testament to his ability to create light and dark in a single moment, though it has been considered his blackest work.
Set at the height of the Spanish Inquisition, Prince Don Carlos falls in love with the Elisabeth de Valois, the eldest daughter of the King of France. When Elisabeth is married off to Carlos’ father as part of a peace treaty, Carlos is outraged. He retreats to the safety of his friendship with Rodrigo, whose humanitarian pursuits have aroused the ire of the inquisition.
