To meet demand, the firm and the franchisees hired about 2,000 temporary and permanent staff.

Mr Paul said: “A lot of people who became delivery drivers and riders had been doing something completely different before.

"We had a few pilots and cabin crew.”

The firm aims to have 1,400 branches, 200 more, in the UK and Ireland in the “medium” term, creating 7,000 jobs, and cut average delivery times from 25 to 20 minutes.

The fastest delivery time is under 10 minutes.

Group profits rose by £2.4m to £101.2m.
