Domino's Is Cooking Up a New Pizza Covered With Pickles

Pickles on a pizza? That’s potentially a public relations problem, or more likely a public relations bonanza, as pizza chain Domino’s Japan subsidiary rolled out its new Pickle Pizza for a limited time.

“For all pickle lovers,” Domino’s Japan said in its announcement tweet, as reported by SoraNews24 on July 5. “We won’t let anyone call pickles a garnish ever again. From now on, pickles are a main dish!”

The pizza is 40cm in size, making it an extra-large in U.S. measurements, and comes with an even spread of 1.32 lbs. of pickles along with a creamy Camembert Cheese Sauce, according to Brand Eating.

The green hue on the pickle pizza is by design, as Domino’s opted to forego tomato sauce on the pie. Instead, the Camembert Cheese can offset the pickle taste to some degree, leaving what Domino’s Japan calls “an exquisite balance” between the sour notes of the pickles and the richness of the cheese.”

The recipe relies largely on dill-flavored cucumber pickles, “which are popular among Japanese people and have a refreshing aroma that brings out the acidity,” Domino’s Japan stated in a July 3 press release.

The pizza sells for the U.S. equivalent of $17.99 (¥2,595 in Japan) for takeout and $34.60 (¥4,990 in Japan).

Out-of-the-ordinary pizza toppings are actually ordinary for Domino’s Japan, which has placed everything from fish and chips to mayonnaise on its pizzas over the years.

Yet few pizza enthusiasts saw pickles coming.

“Japan never has enough (when) disgracing another country’s food. When will this madness stop?” asked one Twitter user.

“For people like me, who don’t like pickles at all, this would be Hell,” said another.

Not everyone – at least in the Land of the Rising Sun – has a pizza pickle problem. Some even have a sense of humor about the new pizza.

“Can you order the Pickles Pizza but ask them to hold the pickles?,” quipped another Twitter user.

Due to limited quantities, the Pickle Pizza sales “will end when sold out,” Domino’s Japan noted.
