Dominik Szoboszlai, Erling Braut Haaland and Arsenal's transfer stance as Europa League beckons

Europa League football beckons for Red Bull Salzburg in the new year.

Defeat at the hands of Liverpool means the Austrian outfit have been denied a round of 16 place in this season's Champions League.

As a result, they could face a Premier League side at some stage in the Europa League after Christmas.

Manchester United and Wolves have already booked their ticket for the round of 32 draw which takes place next week, while Arsenal have made hard work of their progression.

Despite winning their opening three games the Gunners drew with Vitoria on matchday four and then lost 2-1 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt last time out leaving their qualification in the balance.

With that said, the north London outfit will be through to the knockout stages just as long as they avoid defeat against Standard Liege on Thursday evening.

That would set up the prospect of an Arsenal vs Red Bull Salzburg two-legged tie.

Furthermore, it would give the Gunners a first hand view of Dominik Szoboszlai and Erling Braut Haaland - two players attracting interest from the club.

Football.london reported earlier in the season that the midfielder was a target during the summer transfer window and have since been told that the initial approach was with a view to a move at the end of the season.

This was to allow the teenager to gain experience with Salzburg before moving on to Europe's top leagues.

Despite links to Juventus and Inter Milan, it's understood that the Gunners hope that their early manoeuvrings around a deal would leave them well placed should the Austrian champions choose to cash in.

However, football.london understands that Arsenal will want to assess the progress of their own youngsters before making a decision, whilst their midfield transfer plans will be dependant on whether Dani Ceballos returns to Real Madrid when his loan ends.

Meanwhile, scouts were in attendance for Salzburg's 5-1 win away at WSG Swarovski Tirolat the beginning of the season to take in Haaland's performance.

He was on the scoresheet that afternoon and has continued to impress potential suitors - which includes Man United and Juventus - with 28 goals across all competitions so far this season.
