Sky Atlantic has bought the rights to Golden Globe-winning US drama The Affair starring Dominic West and Ruth Wilson.

The Affair, one of the big US hits of the season, will debut on the channel in May.

Exploring the story of the emotional and psychological effects of an extramarital affair, told separately from the male and female perspective, it stars Wilson, from BBC1’s Luther, as Alison, a waitress trying to piece her life together after a family tragedy.

Married to her husband Cole, played by Joshua Jackson, she begins an affair with public school teacher and aspiring novelist Noah, played by West, star of The Wire and, more recently, The Hour and Appropriate Adult.

The drama won best TV drama series at the Golden Globes with Wilson winning best actress in a TV drama series. West was also nominated in the awards.

Sky Atlantic director Zai Bennett said: “I’m delighted we have secured The Affair for Sky Atlantic. Its intricate storytelling and phenomenal acting sit perfectly on the channel, further cementing our channel’s position as the home of quality drama in the UK.”

The Showtime series, which also stars Maura Tierney (ER), has already been commissioned for a second series. Sky will air both of them.
