Dominic Sangma's film 'Rapture' ('Rimdogittanga') has garnered attention after being nominated at the Asian Film Awards and securing French distribution through Capricci at the Hong Kong rights market FilMart. The film follows the story of a 10-year-old boy grappling with night blindness in a village plagued by the fear of child kidnappers.
'Rapture' made its debut at Locarno in 2023 and has since received accolades at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, the Mumbai Film Festival, and the Hainan Island International Film Festival in China. The film, a rare India-China co-production, has been well-received internationally.
The collaboration on 'Rapture' began with China's Xu Jianshang, who met Sangma in 2014 and produced his previous work, 'Ma'ama,' which was recognized at the Shanghai Film Festival. The project was further developed with the involvement of Sun Li from China's Joicy Studio and India producer Anu Rangachar, along with other producers including Harsh Agarwal, Aditya Grover, Stephen Zacharias, and Eva Gunme R. Marak.
The film's journey included participation in various film events and funding support from organizations like Vision Sud Est and the Doha Film Institute. Capricci, known for its work with arthouse films, expressed enthusiasm for bringing 'Rapture' to French audiences, praising Sangma's talent and the film's depiction of his childhood memories and community.
Sangma expressed his excitement for the French release, highlighting the significance of 'Rapture' reaching audiences in France and making history for his home state of Meghalaya. The film's theatrical release in France marks a proud moment for the Garo community and showcases the unique storytelling from northeastern India.
