Dominic McKay airbrushed from Celtic history as Peter Lawwell AGM shout out raises even more questions over exit

Dominic McKay's departure from Celtic was the AGM elephant in the room as the club's board faced shareholders on Wednesday afternoon.

The tumultuous session lasted around two hours and ended with four disputed resolutions and a host of furious fans demanding change at the club from the floor.

But it began with a serious of video interviews as Ian Bankier talked club media chief Gerry McCulloch through the past 12 months - and offered praise for former chief Peter Lawwell, who retired in the summer, for landing manager Ange Postecoglou.

Lawwell was indeed important in landing the former Yokohama F. Marinos boss.

The long time Parkhead supremo's links to the City Football Group, the global umbrella born in Manchester that now counts Yokohama as an affiliate, meant securing Postecoglou from the J-League was a streamlined process.

But McKay appears to have been entirely forgotten about – as no board member dared let the name of Lawwell's summer replacement cross their lips.

His spell at the club was incredibly short-lived, officially beginning on July 1 and coming to an end on September 10 when he was replaced by acting CEO Michael Nicholson. The first part of that title remains, for now, despite Nicholson being appointed as a director at the meeting.

McKay did join months earlier to shadow Lawwell and ensure a smooth handover.

And that meant he was heavily involved in helping to pick the new boss - including heading to London to visit the manager when he emerged from Covid self-isolation upon his arrival from Japan.

The pair took in the Euro 2020 England vs Scotland clash at Wembley together, were pictured on the Glasgow Airport tarmac together, and were paraded at Parkhead together.

Not only that, but on Postecoglou's June 25 unveiling McKay said: "I have spent a lot of time in Australia and spent a lot of time in Japan so I knew all about Ange.

"And when the opportunity came to to speak to him, it was a great conversation. And it was a very productive, quick conversation.

"Probably one of the best conversations if not the best conversation I’ve had in the last five weeks.

"When I offered Ange the role he immediately accepted and I could tell immediately he had the passion, the keenness and the desire to get Celtic back to winning ways.

“We wanted a winner and his experience, being a bit of an outsider like myself, is enormously valuable."

That all raises the question why his only mention at the club AGM was from The Celtic Trust's Jeanette Findlay, who merely questioned why Nicholson has now officially been in place as a temporary appointment for as long as his supposedly permanent predecessor.

Besides that, not a word.
