Former Scotland defender Dominic Matteo has received the all-clear following a brain tumour.

Matteo, who turned out for Liverpool and captained Leeds in his playing days, underwent surgery in November after falling seriously ill.

But on Thursday Matteo completed six months of treatment and rang the end of treatment bell in a heartfelt tribute to the hospital workers responsible for saving his life.

In a Tweet, Matteo said: "Yesterday I got THE phone call, the one I’ve been praying for... my brain scan is clear.

"After 6 months of fear pain rehab surgery and treatment. I’m healthy! It feels unreal!

"The LGI & St James hospital saved my life. They were simply incredible. Thankyou will never be enough!"

In December he was pictured sitting up in hospital after responding well to his surgery and treatment.

Now four months on, he has managed to beat his illness.

Dumfries-born Matteo was capped six times for Scotland in the early 2000s despite playing for England's youth teams.

He stayed in the English Premier League despite Leeds' relegation when he moved on to Blackburn then Stoke before retiring in 2009 and now works as a pundit.
