Dominic Grieve blames Boris Johnson speech for death threats being made against him

Former Tory minister Dominic Grieve yesterday blamed Boris Johnson for a series of death threats against him.

The ex-Attorney General claimed the PM was a “demagogue” whose “tub-thumping populism” directly led extremists to threaten his life.

He told BBC’s Good Morning Scotland: “I want to save the Tory Party from the likes of Mr Johnson. He’s hijacking it and taking it in directions I find extremely worrying.

“I don’t like the rhetoric. It leads straightforwardly to the death threats which I receive.”

One man has been jailed for threatening the Beaconsfield MP because he’s trying to stop the UK crashing out of the EU with No Deal.

Robert Vidler, 64, sent menacing messages to MPs including a voicemail to Mr Grieve saying: “You’re dead, Grieve, we know where you and your f***ing family live.”

Last week the PM used a Facebook Q&A to say MPs were making it harder for him to achieve a Brexit deal.

He called it a “terrible kind of collaboration”.

Tory Guto Bebb called the remarks “absolutely disgraceful” and warned they could trigger more threats against MPs.

Mr Grieve said if top politicians used words like “traitor” or “collaborator” MPs immediately got vile emails and death threats.

He added: “All of us trying to stand up for our principles and for our country are recipients of this.

"I expect a Conservative prime minister to denounce this and make sure his own rhetoric and language avoids anything which can encourage it.”
