Dominic Calvert-Lewin's importance to Marco Silva grows further as Everton star continues to prove invaluable

Being a consistent Premier League goalscorer is something that hasn't yet fully been realised by Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

But that hasn't stopped him being an absolutely crucial member of the Everton line-up over the last few weeks – and this match against Arsenal proved exactly why.

Because the youngster didn't find himself on the scoresheet. In fact, that's the third game in a row he's failed to find the back of the net.

But these past few matches have only enhanced his reputation not just among Everton supporters, but with football fans from across the country.

The fact is, in Marco Silva 's system, there's so much more to being the lead striker than just putting the ball in the back of the net.

It's something supporters would obviously all like to see more often, the manager included, but it's certainly not the be all and end all of being included in the team.

“I like some mobility in the striker,” Silva recently  told the ECHO .

“Today, in football, it is really important you have some mobility in that position because the defenders are stronger and if you can have some mobility to connect the game with your midfielders and, after that, to have the capacity to score goals is really important.

“Mobility and the capacity to connect with your team is really important to me but, the most important thing for them and for me as a manager, is if they have the capacity to score the goals.”

That mobility is something Calvert-Lewin has shown in spades across recent weeks, and this match against Arsenal was no different.

What's worth bearing in mind is the opposition the youngster was facing at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.

Shkodran Mustafi was part of Germany's World Cup winning squad in 2014. Sokratis was playing in the Champions League not so long ago.

From the opening stages though, the 22-year-old had them in the palm of his hand. He was absolutely dominating them right from the off.

Every long ball played forward at head height, Calvert-Lewin was winning it.

Every ball in behind, Calvert-Lewin was first to it.

Every time the ball was played into feet, Calvert-Lewin was strong enough to hold off the challenges.

Everton players ratings - Bernard superb and Dominic Calvert-Lewin excellent against Arsenal

The performance wasn't perfect, and a few moments in the second half perfectly highlighted where the striker does need to improve.

One moment in particular saw Everton breaking forward with speed and Bernard finding acres of space on the left, but Calvert-Lewin dawdled in possession and lost the ball rather than lifting his head up.

But, those slight mistakes paled in comparison to what was another strong display as the Blues' lone striker.

There is obviously the hope that Calvert-Lewin can hone his talents even further and find that natural goalscoring touch in the near future.

But, while he's still in the midst of learning that, he's still proving to be an integral member of this Everton squad for the future.

No wonder Silva rates him so highly.
