Dominic Calvert-Lewin 'catalyst' claim made as Everton seek to revive season

Dominic Calvert-Lewin can be the spark Everton desperately need to turn their season around, according to Danny Mills.

The 24-year-old striker has been missing for much of this season after suffering a broken toe earlier in the campaign, but still has three goals in three appearances this term.

The Toffees have struggled in his absence and currently sit 14th in the Premier League table after winning just one of their last 11 games.

Blues boss Rafael Benitez was unable to spend significantly in the summer to improve his squad due to Financial Fair Play regulations, and has faced a near impossible task attempting to arrest his side’s woeful form.

However, as reported by the Metro , the Spaniard claimed Calvert-Lewin was ‘really close’ to a return to first team action, and Mills believes the England striker would almost have the impact of a new signing.

“He can be the catalyst without a doubt – he makes a huge difference. Mills told Football Insider .

“He gives them a focal point, scores goals, he gives them a different way of playing. He’s their top striker. All of a sudden it gives them the ability to score from crosses and set pieces.

“He can hold the ball up and bring others into play. All of these things can make the difference for Everton.”

Richarlison and Salomon Rondon have deputised in Calvert-Lewin’s absence, but have only yielded four goals between them this term.

Last season the England striker scored an impressive 21 goals across all competitions, and the Blues will need their talisman to produce in the second half of the campaign if they’re to salvage anything from a disappointing season.

Next up for the struggling Toffees is a trip to Burnley on Boxing Day.
