Domhnall Gleeson to play serial killer opposite Steve Carell in 10-part TV series The Patient

Domhnall Gleeson has been signed up to play a serial killer opposite Steve Carell in a new 10-part TV series, The Patient.

The Star Wars actor will play a murderer who takes hostage a psychotherapist, played by Carell, to get help in curbing his homicidal urges.

But in the half-hour series, treating his dangerous patient leads the doctor to deal with waves of his own repressed troubles which creates a journey just as treacherous as his captivity.

It’s a busy time for the 38-year-old Dubliner, who recently finished a sold-out run of Enda Walsh’s play Medicine at New York’s St. Ann’s Warehouse.

He was last seen on our TV screens in Frank of Ireland, which he also co-wrote and co-produced, with his brother Brian.

He was also in the hit TV series Run and will soon be seen in HBO’s White House Plumbers, which tells the story of the masterminds behind the Watergate break in during Richard Nixon’s Presidency.

In film, he is best known for playing General Hux in the recent Star Wars trilogy as well as projects like The Kitchen, The Little Stranger, American Made, Ex Machina, The Revenant and the Peter Rabbit films.

The Patient was originally ordered by FX last October. Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, who created The Americans, will write and executive produce the series, with Carell executive producing in addition to starring.

Also joining the cast are Linda Emond (Succession, The Gilded Age), Laura Niemi (This Is Us, Justified) and Andrew Leeds (The Dropout, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist).

Chris Long has come onboard as executive producer and will also direct the first two episodes.

Kevin Bray and Gwyneth Horder-Payton will also direct episodes of the 10-episode series.

Production is due to start this week.
