Domestic abuser must tell social work if he's dating anyone after being spared jail

A domestic abuser who was spared jail must tell social workers if he’s dating anyone.

Matthew Goodfellow, admitted threatening or abusive behaviour towards a woman at a house in Dechmont Avenue, Motherwell, on September 5.

He also admitted having a knife in the town’s Watling Street on the same date.

Goodfellow, 34, of Merry Street, Motherwell, appeared for sentence at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week, having pleaded guilty to the charges last month.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce urged Sheriff Daniel Kelly not to send his client to prison.

The solicitor said: “Social workers are of the view that supervision would be constructive and an action plan has been drawn up to assist him.”

Sheriff Kelly said: “What’s concerning about this case is it transpired you had a knife in your possession.”

Goodfellow will be under supervision for a year and must disclose to his supervising officer any “partner relationship”.

He must also carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and be under a three-month electronic tagging order.
