A 65-year-old bicyclist was fatally struck by a vehicle Monday in south suburban Matteson.
The man was on a bike about 9:15 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Cicero Avenue and Gateway Drive, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
He was knocked off his bike and struck his head against the pavement, Matteson Police Chief Mike Jones said. He was airlifted to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died the next day at 4:05 p.m., Jones and the medical examiner’s office said.
An autopsy released Wednesday found the Dolton resident died of blunt force injuries to his head from the crash, the medical examiner’s office said.
Witnesses told investigators that the man was riding a bicycle west on the Old Plank Road bike trail and began crossing Cicero Avenue against a red light, Jones said. A man driving an SUV stopped at the intersection drove forward as the light turned green and struck the man, Jones said.
The impact was slow, but the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet, Jones said.
No citations were issued to the driver, Jones said. There were no signs of impairment.
