Dolphins WR Albert Wilson kneels, DE Robert Quinn holds fist in air during anthem

CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ Dolphins wide receiver Albert Wilson kneeled and defensive end Robert Quinn held his right fist in the air Friday during the national anthem before Miami's game against Carolina at Bank of America Stadium. Wide receiver Kenny Stills, who joined Wilson and Quinn last week in their protest of social injustices, didn't travel for game due to an ankle injury.

Stills and Wilson kneeled during the national anthem prior to last week's preseason opener against Tampa Bay while Quinn held his right fist in the air.

They were among about a dozen players out of roughly 2,880 (32 teams, 90 players per team) in the league who decided to make a statement during the national anthem in last week's preseason openers.

The NFL issued a statement last week that basically said there's no change to its anthem policy that states players who are on the sideline must stand, and those who chose not to stand should stay in the locker room or tunnel.

This is the third season Dolphins players have made statements during the national anthem, starting in the 2016 opener when Stills, running back Arian Foster, linebacker Jelani Jenkins and safety Michael Thomas kneeled during the national anthem.

Jenkins only did it for one game and Foster eventually retired during the season, but Stills and Thomas continued through the season and into Miami's wild-card playoff game.

Stills and Thomas also kneeled last season.
