Dolphins would be wise to kick the tires on Derrick Morgan

The Miami Dolphins’ pass rush situation is — what’s the best way to put this — not great. Miami’s entire front seven has a cumulative career total of 43.5 sacks, less than half of what Cam Wake allocated in a decade of terrorizing opposing quarterbacks with the Dolphins.

And while the team is hoping some youthful players such as Tank Carradine, Jayrone Elliott, Charles Harris and others can ignite the rush, they’d be wise to continue looking over their options on the market. One option who could at the very least provide some veteran leadership? Free agent OLB Derrick Morgan.

Morgan is still on the market but has 44.5 sacks to his name — one more than Miami’s entire front seven combined. And while Morgan was never considered a sack artist, he was a productive complimentary pass rusher as recently as 2017 when he logged 7.5 sacks. His 2016 season? He had nine sacks.

Yes, Morgan’s 2018 campaign was super disappointing. But considering Miami’s options, would it not be worthwhile to bring Morgan in for a visit and if things go well offer him a one-year deal to try to recapture some of his prior production?

The Dolphins are hoping to play multiple fronts on defense and Morgan has experience in both odd and even fronts; the Titans ran a 4-3 when they drafted Morgan back in 2010 before transitioning to a 3-4 a few years later.

Miami would be getting a more accomplished pass rusher than anyone it has on the roster on a short-term, team friendly deal, while inking a player that could serve a leadership role on the team and has experience in numerous defenses. What’s not to like?
