The Miami Dolphins waived Dion Jordan on Friday, ending the team's relationship with a player who will go down in history as one of their worst draft picks.
Jordan, whose career with Miami was limited to 26 games in four years because of drug-related suspensions and knee issues he battled last season, was waived after failing a physical. If the defensive end clears the NFL's waiver process, he will become an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team.
The Dolphins traded up to select Jordan out of Oregon with the third overall pick in the 2013 draft.
"For where he was selected, it's not a move that has worked out," Mike Tannenbaum, the Dolphins' executive vice president of football operations, said when addressing Jordan's status with the team at this week's league meetings in Arizona. "That's pretty obvious."
Tannenbaum was not with the Dolphins when Jordan was drafted. Jeff Ireland was Miami's general manager at the time and sent the No. 12 and No. 42 picks to Oakland in order to take Jordan at No. 3.
The Dolphins clear $3.2 million of salary cap space by releasing Jordan, 27, who contributed all of 46 tackles and three sacks during his two seasons on the field.
Last summer, Jordan came back from a year-long suspension that stemmed from his third failed drug test. But the Dolphins kept him on the non-football injury list after watching him practice for three weeks in November and determining he couldn't help the team as a defensive lineman, despite that unit's struggles in 2016.
Jordan's release means that none of the nine members of the Dolphins' 2013 draft class are still with the team.
Dallas Thomas, Mike Gillislee, Caleb Sturgis and Don Jones were released in previous seasons. The Dolphins traded Will Davis and Jamar Taylor.
And this offseason linebacker Jelani Jenkins signed with the Oakland Raiders and tight end Dion Sims signed with the Chicago Bears as free agents.
Despite having a need at defensive end, the Dolphins weren't planning on Jordan playing a major role with the team in 2017.
Miami extended Pro Bowl pass rusher Cameron Wake's contract one season, signed Andre Branch to a three-year, $24 million contract, and traded to acquire William Hayes from the Rams this offseason.
Those are Miami's three front-line defensive ends, and the team is searching for a fourth but might wait to address that position in the draft.
