Dolphins use pick gotten from Saints to trade for Josh Rosen

The New Orleans Saints ended up playing a big part in draft-day intrigue: they helped the Miami Dolphins trade for embattled Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen, who was set aside so quarterback Kyler Murray could be picked first overall.

Essentially, the Cardinals sent Rosen to the Dolphins for this second round pick, No. 62 overall — the selection originally owned by the Saints, which they gave up in a trade up to go get center Erik McCoy — and a 2020 fifth round pick. It seems every party (the Saints, the Dolphins, and the Cardinals) walked away feeling good about what they’d accomplished.

It’s funny how this situation worked out. What if Saints backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater had agreed to sign a free agent contract with his hometown Dolphins? They would not have needed to make this trade for Rosen. And the Saints would have had a harder time finding a trade partner to vault up the board and get their new starting center.

But that’s not how it went down. Bridgewater and McCoy are Saints. Murray is the face of the Cardinals franchise. And Rosen gets a fresh start in Miami.
