Dolphins trade TE Adam Shaheen to Houston Texans

While the Miami Dolphins are getting ready to start their joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, general manager Chris Grier is continuing to work on his roster construction.

On Tuesday, the Dolphins announced that they’ve traded tight end Adam Shaheen and a 2023 seventh-round pick to the Houston Texans for a 2023 sixth-round pick.

Miami originally acquired Shaheen in 2020 for a conditional seventh-round pick from the Chicago Bears. After a 12-reception, 150-yard season that also included three touchdowns, Shaheen received a two-year extension.

In 2021, Shaheen again recorded just 12 receptions, this time for just 110 yards and no trips to the end zone.

With Mike Gesicki and Durham Smythe both returning this offseason, Cethan Carter producing in a special teams role and Hunter Long being selected in the third round of the 2021 draft, Shaheen’s role looked like it was going to continue diminishing.

Now, Miami gets to move up a round in the 2023 draft when there’s a chance that they could’ve lost the player for nothing. They also save roughly $1.9 million in cap space.

In this upcoming year, the Dolphins will hope to see growth from Long in his second year with more opportunities.
