Dolphins trade for talented playmaker, landing RB Lynn Bowden Jr. from Raiders

The Miami Dolphins have agreed in principle to a second trade with the Las Vegas Raiders in as many weeks, this time landing an exciting, multi-faceted offensive playmaker.

The Dolphins will acquire rookie Lynn Bowden Jr. and a sixth-round pick from the Raiders, according to a league source, while Miami will send the fourth-round pick it acquired from Las Vegas for former linebacker Raekwon McMillan back to the Raiders.

Bowden, a third-round pick by the Raiders in April's draft, played running back, receiver, quarterback and returned punts and kicks at Kentucky. He'll join a Dolphins team in need of offensive weapons heading into next Sunday's opener at New England.

Bowden did it all in college, finishing in the top five nationally in all-purpose yards last season. He led his team in rushing with 1,468 yards (7.9 yards per carry) and 13 touchdowns, and in receiving with 30 catches for 348 yards and a touchdown.

As a returner, Bowden returned four punts for 53 yards (13.2 yards per return) and nine kickoffs for 220 yards (24.4 yards per return).

Bowden even played quarterback, although he was not asked to pass much, completing only 35 of 74 attempts for 403 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. Still, he boasted a 6-2 record as a starting quarterback.

The Dolphins turned former Navy quarterback Malcolm Perry, who they drafted with a seventh-round pick, into a receiver and could have the same aspirations for Bowden.

The Dolphins' playmaking depth is sparse behind receivers DeVante Parker, who hasn't practice since Aug. 24, receiver Preston Williams, tight end Mike Gesicki, and Perry, who has made several impressive plays already in camp.

Bowden's experience playing quarterback could also bode well for the Dolphins if offensive coordinator Chan Gailey wants to run more wildcat running plays or in the dire event that the Dolphins do not want to play Tua Tagovailoa if starter Ryan Fitzpatrick is unable to play.

The Dolphins traded McMillan and a fifth-round pick to the Raiders last Saturday in exchange for a fourth-round pick. So, the Dolphins ultimately traded McMillan and a fifth rounder for Bowden and a sixth-round pick.
