Dolphins tell safety Reshad Jones that he “won’t be traded this year”

The Reshad Jones saga has been a cyclical part of the offseason for these Miami Dolphins. The offseason started with a disgruntled Jones, who then had things smoothed over when the team hired Brian Flores to be the new head coach. But then trade rumors swirled once more when Jones skipped voluntary team activities, only to drop off when Jones reported to the facility.

Fast forward a few months and the rumors swirling around Reshad Jones have waxed and waned once more.

Reports indicate that the Dolphins are making phone calls around the league, trying to prompt teams to trade for some of their valuable — but non-long term —  assets. Jones was one of the first names on the list. Or at least he was, until he met with the Dolphins media yesterday and revealed the Dolphins have given him an answer.

“They said I won’t be traded this year,” said Jones.

One is safe to assume that the financial implications and Jones’ age/injury questions have really cut down on their ability to flip Jones. The team surrendering in their efforts to trade Jones is bittersweet — as Jones does hold a special place in the heart of many Dolphins fans for his last decade of play in South Florida. Ultimately, Jones is more valuable on the Dolphins’ roster than he is playing elsewhere via trade and Miami still being on the hook for $4M against the 2019 salary cap regardless.

And the Dolphins have already backed Jones’ claim — the team cut safety T.J. McDonald yesterday in a surprising move, clearing up room for more prominent reps from Jones this season. With McDonald out, it’s fair to say Jones is in — and not going anywhere.
